OOMF! Protein Oats Review

When OOMF! offered to send me some of their protein oat pots to try, I was looking forward to giving them a go. I have come across similar concepts before but have never felt really impressed by any. They’re often sugary (even those containing unrefined sugars), packed with artificial sweeteners or contain other ingredients which are potentially detrimental to our health. In my experience, instant porridge-type products tend to be disappointing in taste, too watery or too runny. OOMF’s products are different (in a good way!) so let me explain what makes these protein oat pots stand out so much.

First of all, not only are they free from added sugars and artificial sugars and flavours, but they also contain an impressive 20g of whey protein (equivalent to 3 eggs), making them the ideal combination of carbs and protein for a post-workout breakfast. They are also sweetened with xylitol (tree birch extract) which won’t cause a blood sugar spike and is beneficial for those pearly whites of yours, along with the other 2 main ingredients: oats and skimmed milk. I was sent their protein oat pots in golden syrup flavour – I was a little apprehensive as I often find sweetened products too sickly and overwhelmingly sweet (which golden syrup is well-known for!) However, I am pleased to say that this flavour was absolutely gorgeous, and I was very pleasantly surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. It has a subtle, caramel-like flavour, is not at all overpowering and has just the right level of sweetness. As for the consistency, the instructions on the pot tell you how much water to add to create your preferred consistency, and mine came out as thick and creamy as I’d wanted it to be.

If you follow me on Instagram, then you’ll know that I never have porridge without it being in ‘zoat’ (zucchini-oat) form. I add grated zucchini/courgette to my porridge (no, you can’t taste it) because it massively increases the volume, fibre and nutrients, therefore making it more filling without adding lots of unnecessary calories. OOMF’s protein oat pots worked really well for this. I poured in the boiling water up to the ‘runny’ line, added in 100g grated courgette, stirred it all up and left the lid on for 1 minute. It thickened up nicely and I topped it with frozen berries and peanut butter.

As I do my workouts early before I head to school, these could not be a more convenient breakfast option. The amount of time it takes to boil the kettle (and grate courgette if you’re a zoats fan!) is minimal and the outcome is rewarding. As I have only tried the golden syrup flavour, I can’t tell you what the other flavours taste like, but if they’re similar to this one then I’d expect them to be just as delicious. I would 100% recommend these as a tasty and time-saving breakfast option. I always make my own breakfast but these have been such a convenient post-workout option this week that next time I need to grab breakfast on-the-go, I’ll definitely be reaching for OOMF!

    The chocolate flavour is pretty poor, not very chocolatey at all and I found it hard to finish the pot, but I agree the golden syrup flavour is very nice! For 20g protein from your breakfast it’s a great choice

      I agree with you – I tried the chocolate flavour long after I wrote this review and also found it disappointing. But I love the golden syrup flavour and think it’s great for breakfast when you’re short on time!
